PIES FOR PROGRESS

Defend Democracy.

I cook, you donate to the States Project, and I'll deliver food to your door (in Louisville, Kentucky). It's a way we can work together to make change in state legislatures, where laws are made that affect our lives most directly. State legislatures make education policy, gun laws, decisions on women’s health care and so much more. Changing state legislatures makes our lives better today and set a better direction for the country tomorrow.

Why Pies for Progress?

There are a lot of good causes. I hope that by providing a little edible incentive, I can entice you to join a growing number of us who are working to make a difference in politics at the state level, where a little effort and a little money can go a long way to make our lives better. I cook, you eat. It’s a simple and joyful way to keep constant vigil on our democracy.

What else?

It’s on all of us to keep our democracy thriving. Sometimes that feels like a heavy burden — not all of us can make phone calls and canvas. Pies for Progress can help you participate in a meaningful and  impactful way. Each month Pies for Progress features a range of choices – entrees, plant-based meals, soups and more: the likes of lemon chicken, falafel, butternut red lentil soup, Korean meatballs, homemade breads and, of course, pie. Check in and donate often. The menu changes monthly.

About me

I’m Sarah Fritschner. I am a native Louisvillian with a long career in food — from writing at newspapers like the Washington Post, to writing cookbooks, to contributing to magazines like Gourmet and Food &Wine. I was food editor of the Louisville Times and (Louisville) Courier-Journal for 25 years, and editor of Edible Louisville magazine for nearly 10 years.

In between and after, I’ve worked on moving farm food into Louisville. I’ve managed farm markets and worked to get local food served at universities and county schools.

Like many people, I became concerned after the presidential election of 2016, worrying a lot about the turn our country was taking. I wanted to do my part to help, but I’m not someone who can write a big check, or organize large groups.

When I found The States Project, it made sense to me to gather friends and family into a “giving circle” of donors that could raise more impactful sums for state legislature races. Laws at the state level affect us more directly than anything in Washington. I thought cooking for people would differentiate my cause from others and encourage people to donate. Pies for Progress was born. So far, we’ve raised more than $185,000, providing resistance to harmful policies and while strengthening the broad effort change lives for the better.
